Nathan Lawrence Johnson grew up in Pine City. He's been a city planner, an author of local-history books, a one-time candidate for the Minnesota House, and more recently a public-facing figure in East Central Minnesota Pride — credited with the group's event photography, named in 2026 national LGBTQ press as its secretary, and a lead voice on its historical-marker campaign.

He's also a convicted sex offender.

In 2016, while serving as Pine City's city planner, Johnson was arrested and charged with two felony counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct and two misdemeanor counts of furnishing tobacco to a minor, involving one juvenile complainant. In March 2017 he pled guilty to one felony CSC count and one tobacco count; the other two counts were dismissed. On May 30, 2017, he was sentenced to ten years' probation, jail time, electronic home monitoring, and was ordered to register as a predatory offender.

The question I keep coming back to isn't the 2005-2016 civic history by itself. It's whether someone with a 2017 felony conviction involving a minor — and a predatory-offender registration requirement — later held, or was publicly presented in, a trust-facing leadership role at a Pride organization, and whether that history was ever disclosed to the org, its members, or the public.

Identity. Legal name Nathan Lawrence Johnson, goes by "Nate." Born October 29, 1977, in Fridley; lives in Pine City. Listed as an Account Executive at Lavender Magazine on the magazine's own contact page.

Civic record. City Planner / Community Development Director for Pine City in the mid-2010s. Won the American Planning Association's 2014 Carol Thomas Award for an outstanding small-town/rural planner. Ran in the 2012 DFL primary for Minnesota House District 11B. Wrote two local-history books, Pine City (2010) and Legendary Locals of Pine City (2014), and is credited as a member of the Pine County Historical Society.

The case, now fully documented. Arrested June 10, 2016, at age 39, while still city planner. Charged with two felony fourth-degree CSC counts and two misdemeanor tobacco counts. The complaint's first count alleges sexual contact between July 2014 and June 2015 with a complainant 13 to 16 years old, Johnson being more than 48 months older. In March 2017 he pled guilty to the CSC count and one tobacco count; the other two were dismissed. Sentenced May 30, 2017 by Judge Edward Bearse: ten years' probation, 90 days in the Pine County Jail (work-release eligible, four days already credited), 90 days electronic home monitoring, a $500 fine, and a concurrent 90 days on the tobacco count.

Conditions of that sentence: register as a predatory offender, no unsupervised contact with anyone under 18, no contact at all with the victim, complete an outpatient sex-offender program, no pornographic material, internet-monitoring software required, no drugs or alcohol, DNA/polygraph testing if probation directs it, no firearms.

Three Pine County judges recused themselves from the case. So did the Pine County Attorney, citing his office's working relationship with Johnson's employer, the City of Pine City. Isanti County's attorney ended up prosecuting it instead.
