Nathan Johnson Collected Civic Honors as a Pine City Historian. The Public Was Never Told He's a Convicted Sex Offender.

Nathan Lawrence Johnson has a public record of civic accomplishment and a felony conviction for a sex crime against a minor. Both are documented.

The civic side: Johnson grew up in Pine City, worked as the city's planner and community development director, won a state award for small-town planning in 2014, wrote two local-history books, ran once for the Minnesota House, and became a visible figure in East Central Minnesota Pride — credited with the group's event photography and named in 2026 national LGBTQ press as its secretary.

The conviction

Johnson, then Pine City's city planner, was arrested June 10, 2016, and charged with two felony counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct and two counts of furnishing tobacco to a minor. The complaint alleged sexual contact between July 2014 and June 2015 with a juvenile between 13 and 16, with Johnson more than four years older. (Pine City Pioneer coverage of the proceedings.)

In March 2017 he pleaded guilty to one felony criminal-sexual-conduct count and one tobacco count; the other two were dismissed. On May 30, 2017, he was sentenced to ten years' probation, 90 days in the Pine County Jail, 90 days of electronic home monitoring, and a $500 fine. He was ordered to register as a predatory offender, complete an outpatient sex-offender program, submit to internet monitoring, and have no unsupervised contact with anyone under 18.

Three Pine County judges and the Pine County Attorney recused themselves — the county attorney citing his office's working relationship with the City of Pine City, where Johnson worked. Isanti County's attorney prosecuted the case instead.

The conviction is public court record, reported at the time by the local paper and picked up by CBS Minnesota, FOX 9, and the Star Tribune.

The two records meet in public

A person convicted of a sexual offense against a minor, court-ordered to register as a predatory offender and to stay away from unsupervised contact with children, was later presented to the public — by national and state press — as an officer of a community Pride organization whose events draw families and children.

The conviction is documented. The public-facing role is documented. Whether the organization or the public was ever told how the two connect is not.
