Timothy Ryan Gregg is from Eagan. He used to be a Homeland Security Investigations Special Agent and an FBI Task Force Officer — the kind of guy who carries a badge and a database login. On June 4, 2025, he was charged by federal complaint with producing child sexual abuse material, after a father found sexually explicit images and videos on his minor daughter's phone. The person in them turned out to be Gregg.

He waived indictment and pled guilty on October 30, 2025, to one felony count of transporting sexually explicit visual depictions of a minor. On July 9, 2026, Judge Joan Ericksen sentenced him to seven years in federal prison plus ten years of supervised release. Prosecutors wanted 14 years; his attorney argued for the five-year mandatory minimum. They landed in between.

According to court documents cited by the Star Tribune, the victim — 17 at the time — met Gregg on Tinder. They met up at a hotel repeatedly between early March and late May 2025. Gregg used his actual HSI/ICE work email to book the rooms.

His attorney told the Star Tribune the case ended a law enforcement career that had about three years left before retirement, and that Gregg has since divorced. That's attorney spin, not a court record, so I'm labeling it as such — but it's the only account of the personal fallout on the public record right now.

Here's the part that isn't resolved yet: a federal agent used his government email and, presumably, whatever database access came with the job, in the course of this. A father caught this. Not HSI. Not the FBI.

What I don't know: whether HSI actually fired him or whether he resigned or retired first. Whether either agency did any internal review of how his access was used, or changed anything as a result. Whether there were any complaints or red flags on him before June 2025. Whether he'll have to register as a sex offender, and in which state. None of that shows up anywhere in the public record as of this writing.

He pled guilty and got sentenced, so there's no ambiguity about what happened. What's still open is what his own agencies did about one of their own.
